Clea Shearer, one half of Get organized with the Home Edit duo, has revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
In an Instagram post shared Wednesday, in which she shared an image of herself wearing a bathrobe from Nashville’s Vanderbilt Breast Center, Shearer reflected on the news. “I have breast cancer. It’s hard to say, but it’s easier than keeping it to myself,” she wrote.
Shearer also said she will undergo a double mastectomy this week.
“I found a lump myself in the last week of February,” Shearer said of the news. Despite trying to make an appointment with her midwife for “several months” and telling them she’d discovered a lump, Shearer said “they couldn’t accommodate me.” She continued, “I had to request a mammogram from my primary care physician, which led to an ultrasound and then a triple emergency biopsy.”
Shearer explained that she was told she has “two tumors, 1 cm each, that are aggressive and fast-moving – but I noticed it early. If I hadn’t taken this on, I’d be in a very different situation now.”
While sharing her diagnosis publicly is a “personal choice,” Shearer said sharing the news “will give the cancer a sense of purpose.” She then encouraged others to “examine yourself regularly, always stand up for yourself, and prioritize your health over your busy schedules.”
“It’s also important to note that I was under 40 when these tumors formed, and have no history of breast cancer in my family. Even if cancer seems unlikely, it’s still very possible,” she noted.
Despite staying positive, Shearer admits that wasn’t the case originally, and recalls having “why me” feelings after breaking the news. But after thinking about it for a while, she began to think, “Honestly, why not me?!” I have all the support, resources and a platform to help other people with this. So if someone has to have breast cancer, I’m happy to leave it to me. Thank you for being on this journey. I love our community, and you mean more to me than you’ll ever know. xo, Clea.”
Shearer’s diagnosis comes amid the release of Netflix’s second season Get organized with the Home Edit. Shearer and Joanna Teplin’s company was acquired by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine in February.
