Sex educationDougray Scott and Lou de Laâge were among the winners of the 2022 International Emmy Awards.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the winners at Monday’s ceremony in New York City at New York’s Hilton Midtown Hotel.
Sex education took home the award for best comedy. Other award-winning shows include watch for drama series, and Love on the Spectrum – Season 2 for unscripted entertainment. On the acting side, Scott won for best performance by an actor, while Lou de Laâge won in the actress category.
Miky Lee, Vice Chairman of CJ Group, was honored with the International Emmy Directorate Award. She received the award from South Korean actor Song Joong-ki.
“I am delighted and proud as a Korean to have our content recognized, but I share this joy with the greater global community,” Lee said during her acceptance speech. “I have heard from so many that the success of Korean content has given everyone hope that everyone can be a part of global pop culture. I would like to continue to build a bridge between the people of the world, real stories know no barriers. When I watch German or Scandinavian TV shows, I forget that there are subtitles and that they are different cultures. Once we are connected, language is no longer a real barrier when it comes to real human interaction. I will continue on my journey to be the bridge. Let’s march on together and connect more people every day. That is why it is such an honor to receive this award tonight. Thank you.”
Ava DuVernay was also honored with the International Emmy Founders Award, presented by Blair Underwood and Benjamin Bratt. “A lot has changed in the way we consume television. But what hasn’t changed in a medium invented more than 100 years ago is the power that the medium gives us,” said DuVernay. “Television, especially international television, is a window to the world, connecting people from all walks of life and from places where I am, where there is a lack of opportunities to view images on film. We don’t have art houses in Compton. There are no independent movie theaters in Selma, the segregation in the movie theater where you can’t really find other people’s footage. Television becomes that window in ways that are expansive and expand our understanding of ourselves and each other. It is vital.”
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded Emmys to television producers and performers from eight different countries, including the UK, South Korea, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller hosted the ceremony.
