Hollywood stars were heartbroken at the news of Paul Sorvino’s death on Monday and took to social media to pay tribute to the late actor.
Sorvino, the father of Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino, died of natural causes on Monday at the age of 83, his wife Dee Dee announced. Publicist Roger Neal said he died at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
“Our hearts are broken, there will never be another Paul Sorvino, he was the love of my life and one of the greatest artists to ever be on screen and stage,” said Dee Dee.
Throughout his career, Sorvino starred in a variety of projects, including: the gambler (1974), Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet (1996), Oliver Stone’s Nixon (1995) and in the cooler (2003). Other notable roles include: The Panic in Needle Park (1971), William Friedkin’s The lane of the Brink (1978), The Rocketeer (1991) and The firm (1993).
Sorvino received a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk Award for his performance in Jason Miller’s original Broadway production That Championship Season in 1973. He later starred in and directed his only feature film, The problem with Cali (2012). Sorvino joined NBC’s Law & authority for a season and played as Det. Phil Cerretta.
Sorvino’s most famous role is his portrayal of Paul Cicero in Good Boys (1990).
In a tribute shared on social media, Mira Sorvino wrote:,,My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed away. My heart is torn apart – a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’ll send your love in the stars, Daddy as you take off.”
Sorvino’s death follows the recent passing of his Goodfellas co-star Ray Liotta and Godfather star James Canaan. In her tribute Dianne Warren remembered the legendary actors: “Ray Liotta, James Caan and now Paul Sorvino, we can be pretty sure a badass Goodfellas/Godfather mashup movie is being made in heaven right now!”
Some of Sorvino’s co-stars paid tribute to the actor. Ralph Macchio remembered his Lost Cat Corona co-starred as “one of the most sincere and honest actors I’ve had the pleasure of working with and getting to know.” Forest Whitaker also shared a tribute to him Godfather of Haarlem co-star writes: βIt was very special to sit still with the great Paul Sorvino, talking through the games of life. I send much comfort and love to his family and wish them all eternal blessings, love and light.β In the meantime, Marlee Matlinwho co-starred with Sorvino in the 2013 film 4Closedwrote: “I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to work with the wonderful Paul Sorvino. And now I am so sad to read of his passing. Not only was he kind, he was so talented and so giving as an actor. I send my love to Mira and the rest of the family. He will surely be missed. REST IN PEACE.”
