Netflix released the first teaser trailer for Copenhagen Cowboy, the upcoming Danish series from director Nicholas Winding Refn (Motive, Only God forgives), and it seems Refn’s return home hasn’t dulled its gory and often stunningly beautiful aesthetic.
The teaser is a series of neon-drenched images set to a pulsating techno beat that, in typical Refn style, provokes and even shocks, but offers little explanation. The aesthetic of the series will look familiar to Refn fans from his most recent movie outings, Only God forgives (2013) and The Neon Demon (2016).
Copenhagen Cowboy Angela Bundalovic plays Miu, a mysterious, wide-eyed woman who, after a lifetime of servitude, begins to break free and take revenge on Copenhagen’s criminal underworld.
Copenhagen CowboyRefn’s first project in his native Denmark in 15 years, also features Refn’s daughter, Lola Corfixen, Zlatko Buric, Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, LiIi Zhang and Dragana Milutinovic. It will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 9 and will be released worldwide on Netflix later this year.
