AirPlay 2 upgraded the streaming protocol supported by Apple and some third-party devices to allow a host device, such as a Mac, to select multiple speakers or audio output devices at the same time. This gives you flexibility, such as using a range of inexpensive speakers or allowing sound to be streamed to multiple rooms without the need for an integrated multi-room sound system, although many also support AirPlay 2. (You can find a full list of AirPlay 2 compatible hardware on this page.)
However, a Macworld reader asked if there was a way to accomplish a tricky workflow: streaming video from their iPhone to an Apple TV, which would use their TV’s speakers as output and send the sound to another as well. set of speakers to stream. If they selected multiple AirPlay destinations on the iPhone, the video would stop streaming to the Apple TV.
The solution is to work from the right part of the streaming order, they discovered. An Apple TV with AirPlay 2 (3rd generation or later) can also choose multiple audio destinations:
- Press and hold the TV button on your Apple remote.
- In the dialog that slides in from the right, navigate to the AirPlay icon at the bottom.
- In the Speakers menu, select multiple speakers.
- press the TV to exit the selection display and press again to exit the menu.
- Use on your iPhone, iPad or Mac Mirror screen controls to stream audio and video to Apple TV.
