After a deluge of Apple releases featuring a new Apple TV 4K, M2 iPad Pros, 10th Gen iPad, iOS 16.1, and macOS Ventura in the space of a week, we expected new Macs to arrive every day. Now it looks like we’ll have to wait a lot longer.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s next round of Macs won’t launch until 2023, likely at an event in March. He reports that Apple “aimed for the release of the upgraded models — including M2-based versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros — in the first quarter of calendar 2023.”
Apple has used its spring event to launch new Macs in recent years – last March saw the launch of the Mac Studio and last April came the 24-inch iMac. However, if no new Macs arrive in November, this would be the first Mac-less fall since 2017:
- 2021: 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro (M1 Pro/Max)
- 2020: MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini (M1)
- 2019: 16-inch MacBook Pro (Intel)
- 2018: MacBook Air, Mac mini (Intel)
Gurman says the new Macs will be released along with the launch of macOS Ventura 13.3. Apple only released the first beta of macOS Ventura 13.1 last week, which we assumed would appear on the new Macs. But while that release will likely come in November with Apple’s new Freeform app, Gurman doesn’t think there will be any new Macs.
Apple reported record $11.5 billion in Mac sales during its fiscal fourth quarter, but warned that year-over-year growth probably wouldn’t be as high for the Mac in the all-important holiday quarter.
During the fourth quarter conference call, Tim Cook said Apple was “approached”[ing] the holiday season with our product range,” which could mean it’s done releasing new products. However, since the rumored products are little more than M2 updates for the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro and the Mac mini, Cook could also be referring to the actual lineup.
In any case, we will keep our eyes peeled for the next Tuesdays just in case.
