Hollywood mourns the death of Nichelle Nichols, who made history for her portrayal of communications officer Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek.
Nichols died of natural causes on Saturday at the age of 89, her son Kyle Johnson wrote on Facebook.
“However, its light, like the ancient galaxies now seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn and be inspired by,” he wrote Sunday. “Her life was a life well lived and as such a model for all of us.”
