Queen Elizabeth passed away on Thursday at the age of 96, making Prince William and Kate Middleton the new Prince and Princess of Wales.
On Thursday, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall assumed the titles that they had been bestowed as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their wedding day in 2011.
King Charles III, formerly known as Prince Charles, addressed the nation for the first time in his capacity as king on Friday. In addition, he revealed new titles for William, the heir, and Kate during his speech.
The monarch declared that William, as his successor, “now adopts the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me,” and that his elder son would “then succeed me as Duke of Cornwall and take on the obligations for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have accepted for more than five decades.”
William’s appointment as the future Prince of Wales was something Charles said he was “glad to create,” adding that it was a title he had had the “greatest honor to hold for so much of my life and duty.”
“With Catherine standing at his side, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will — I know — continue to inspire and steer our national dialogue, helping in elevating the underdog to the foreground where essential help may be provided.”
Princess Diana, who passed away in 1997, was the final person to address herself as a “Princess of Wales.” Even though Camilla, the current Queen Consort, has the title as well, she didn’t use it.
